Engineer for development and analytical controls in biomaterials

• Full time, 100%

• Based in Lausanne (Biopôle Epalinges)

Volumina Medical is a start-up, spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), active in the field of medical devices. The company develops breakthrough innovations for plastic and reconstructive surgery. The first product is an implantable biomaterial and targets the regeneration of soft parts of the human body which are damaged due to ageing, tumor excision, genetic malformation, or trauma. To expand our process development team, we are looking for a highly motivated engineer to join our Company and contribute directly to the development of our products for tissue regeneration.

The main responsibilities of the candidate will be to develop and perform technical studies and analytical measurements for characterizing produced products and raw materials. The activities of the candidate will be at the cross-section between analytical quality controls and Development (product and process). The candidate will be integrated in an interdisciplinary team, involving chemists, biologists and process engineers. Missions will for example be about the characterization of biomaterials with different techniques, as well as validation of engineering solutions for the improvement of the manufacturing process of the medical devices being developed by the Company.

Your key missions

• Perform analytical characterizations of biomaterial prototypes and document the tests results according to ISO 13485 and applicable guidelines for implantable medical devices (e.g. extrusion force measurement, measurement of mechanical properties, measurement of chemical properties, incoming inspections, verification of technical documentation for raw materials, …).

• Write technical study protocols, implement them and write reports about technical studies involving analytical characterizations and bench testing.

• Manage external service providers to perform specific analytical measurements to obtain high quality results in a timely manner, manage related budgets.

• Place orders and perform incoming inspections of the goods received

• Interact with the biology team and participate to the planning of biology experiments

• Document all results according to guidelines and in accordance with our QMS

• Present results to the team on a regular basis and as required by the manager

Your formation and experience

• Engineering degree, or master in Materials Sciences, Chemistry, Polymer chemistry, preferentially with a at least 3 years of validated experience in a laboratory or in a technological role in a Company, where lab work and rigorous documentation skills played a key role.

• Practical experience in laboratory techniques or bench testing is a must (e.g. HPLC, GPC, NMR, FTIR, microscope imaging, samples preparation, bench analytical techniques).

• Experience in a regulated environment and in writing technical documentation is a strong plus.

• Able to use CAD software and to interact with external mechanical workshops for the manufacturing and assembly of mechanical systems is a plus.

• Oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Your mindset and personality

• You are rigorous and enjoy lab work; you are disciplined and care about details

• You are proactive and able to work autonomously

• You are creative and can solve technical problems by proposing out of the box ideas
