Robotics Engineer

Distalmotion believes that every patient undergoing minimal invasive surgery should benefit from the best of surgical expertise and robotic technology. This is the vision that made us create Dexter, the world’s first and only on-demand robotic surgery system. Thanks to Dexter, surgeons have never been closer to their patients while benefiting from robotic best-in-class technology.

Distalmotion has been created in 2012 by passionate and open-minded people with various experiences. Today, we are still convinced that an inclusive and international company culture is the best way to continue growing. Our leadership is highly committed to promote diversity among the teams and welcome every employee based on their identity.

Tasks

  • Participate actively in the requirements specification, prototyping, design, development, test specification and verification of the system’s motion and safety -related software.

  • Lead the development, verification and validation of novel robotic algorithms for control of the manipulators and surgical instruments in motion and/or force.

  • Design, prototype in the lab, implement and validate plant and control models for robotic manipulators and wristed instruments.

  • Strongly drive the collaboration with the mechatronics teams to simulate, pre-test and co-design new kinematics and robotic components.

  • Give active support the development of test benches for algorithm and system verification. This concerns mechanical, electronics and software components.

  • Improve the system performance by proposing and conducting experimental studies on design improvements (architecture, technology, state of the art algorithms).

  • Understand and comply with medical device regulations. This concerns design control, risk management, defect management, and change management processes.

  • Be actively involved in usability engineering & human factors studies.

  • Be actively involved in cross-functional complaints investigations, CAPA and root cause analysis.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in control systems ( linear, nonlinear, optimal, robust, adaptive control )  and software development in the field of robotics.

  • Experience with manipulator dynamics modelling ( Euler-Lagrange, Newton-Euler, Featherstone, etc  ).

  • Experience with multi-task inverse differential kinematics control of a manipulator ( floating-base / underactuated systems is a plus ).

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for real-time control and data processing.

  • Experience with robotics toolkits ( MathWorks Robotics Toolbox, ROS/ROS2, Gazebo, etc ).

  • Experience with partial sensing techniques ( Kalman filters, Particle filters, etc. ).

  • Experience with human robot interaction (Hand-guiding, impedance/admittance control, series elastic actuators control, etc ).

  • Experience with software static test analysis, unit testing methods, model-based design, hardware-in-the-loop and rapid control-prototyping approaches.

  • Experience with design of experiments or statistical analysis ( factor analysis, ANOVA, paired t-test, non-parametric methods, etc  ), is a plus.

  • Experience with development under medical device regulations ( IEC 62304 ) and working within an ISO 13485 certified QMS, is a plus.

  • Proved capacity to work in teams, propose and debate solutions, as well as excellent communication of work results.

  • Professional oral and written skills in English.
