A JOINT AND LASTING IMPACT

At their heart, the life sciences are about life on earth – which is why we’re committed to protecting both people and the planet. In 2021, Biopôle set out wide-ranging sustainability-oriented goals. A key part of this journey is our work with property investors, who help us make our buildings as sustainable as possible – including by using roof space for solar panels and monitoring temperature and lighting.

At Biopôle, everyone believes in the value of collaboration in research. Likewise, we aim to inspire our community to join our drive towards a more sustainable future. There is no getting away from the fact that laboratories are carbon- and resource-intensive – but not every research project needs its own space and materials. We created the shared laboratories StartLab and Superlab to improve efficiencies and reduce waste. Another resource-sharing initiative is the virtual marketplace on the MyBiopôle app, which allows members to exchange lab and office supplies.

PLANET

Reducing carbon emissions is at the top of Biopôle’s sustainability agenda. By 2030, we aim to cut emissions within our direct control by 24%, while mobility is a key area of action given the high number of people who use the campus every day. We are working to make mobility more sustainable and accessible through excellent public transport connections, 312 bicycle parking spaces, showers, improved pedestrian areas, Mobility car-sharing, and EV charging stations.

We are also taking action to improve the campus environment. The campus road has a 20 km/h speed limit, while 51 trees have been planted to provide shade and enhance biodiversity. We also reduced on-site lorry deliveries through a centralised shop and monitor energy use in our buildings to support our emissions-reduction goals.

Our commitment to sustainability extends across the campus, and we are proud to have renewed our credentials as a green space with Fondation Nature & Economie, achieving its highest possible certification. Together, these initiatives contribute to a greener, more sustainable and connected Biopôle campus.

SOCIAL

We aim to ensure that all of our members feel safe and supported on campus, which is why we organise first aid trainings and have installed defibrillators in every campus building to increase chances of survival in the event of a medical emergency. Having established a lactation room, we also plan to open a crèche in 2025 to better accommodate mothers working on campus.

The talent of tomorrow is an important aspect of our corporate social responsibility agenda. So far, we’ve partnered with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) to help run the Innovate4Life programme and have launched our own Postgraduate Consulting scheme, both of which give talented students and postgraduates valuable experience in a start-up environment and enhance their employability. We also support other student initiatives, including the Life Sciences Career Day and the Faces of Industrial Research. And there’s more to come – watch this space.
