School of Medicine of Tongji University

The School of Medicine has three major academic divisions. The Basic Medical Sciences Division consists of 11 departments and teaching groups, including three newly reformed departments: Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, and Department of Regenerative Medicine. The Preventive Medicine Division consists of 6 teaching and research groups/labs, focusing on nutrition sciences, toxicology, epidemiology and biomeidical statistics, public health, maternity and infant care, as well as professional diseases. The Clinical Medical Division is the largest division, which has five affiliated hospitals, namely, Tongji Hospital, the Shanghai No.10 People's Hospital, East Hospital, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, and Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital. The three divisions work closely together to conduct translational medical research focusing on regenerative medicine, immunology, tumor biology, aging and age-related diseases, and traditional Chinese medicine. The school offers undergraduate (five-year) program, and graduate (seven- year program for master degree and eight-year program for M.D. degree) programs for medical professional education. In addition, it also offers graduate programs for scientific research and awards the students master and doctoral degrees in medical sciences. TUSM has 78 faculty members, including 16 professors and 22 associate professors in basic medical sciences and preventive medicine divisions. It has also 571 faculty members in the clinical medical division, including 177 professors and 194 associate professors. Each year, TUSM recruits totally 150 undergraduate students and about the same number of graduate students. Some oversea students are accepted to study in TUSM for medical degrees.

The Medical School upholds the conception of "elite education" and "human-oriented" education. Taking advantage of the university's highly diversified academic resources, advanced teaching facilities, superior academic strengths in humanities and sciences, as well as international partners, the school is committed to educating quality students with innovative thinking and comprehensive knowledge of humanities, sciences and medicine.
